One problem we have today is that modems are not being properly tested for the slow speeds. We have purchased several modems which no longer respond to the baud rates that these terminals talk at. The following information is based on our testing and may change.
The other problem is the concept of the "WinModem". These modems do not have the controller on board them. They use a software driver in Windows to drive the analog components. The driver is not designed to work with slow speeds. That means that they do not work properly at the slow speeds. We have also seen them "drop carrier" when the carrier is not really dropped. Based on that, we do not recommend internal modems.
To compete with the "WinModem", a new type of external modem was developed, the V.92. This modem does not have a controller on it either. Some work, some do not.
| Actiontec | 56K V.92 external | Does not connect at 300 baud |
| Diamond SupraMax V.92 | 56K external | Does not connect at 300/1200 baud |
| Zoom | 56K external | Will connect at 1200 and 300 but will not drop to 300 when set to 1200. |
| USRobotics Sportster | 33.6K external fax modem | Works but takes a long time to synch up at 300 baud |
| USRobotoics | 56K external V.92 | Some of the older copies of this modem did not work at 300 baud. Newer versions do. |
| Practical Peripherals | 2400 | One of the best modems we used |
A supplier of older modems is Modem Express.
